It used to be that my mind would wonder,
toward days gone dry, in the winter of solace.
Words in my mouth like salt and chocolate
savor strongly of earth and sweat.
From among the thorn emerges the flower,
she said to me, when once I was her child.
Wake my daughter, don’t waste the sun,
spun warm on American skin, child of the melting pot.
Be strong in the face of what they say you’re not.
Rise dear one, greet strong the wind,
no one can hide from, erosion of fury.
It’s in your blood, my love, survival intrinsic.
Absence of fear no human has yet known.
Trembling beloved one, remember,
Brevity in this life,
Breath in moments,
Pulse strong once, will struggle,
There is freedom in breaking,
Life in death,
Legacy in thought,
Craft yours remembrances well.
Release not the hatred that binds you.
Salted skin, weeping we walk
again into the sun.
One tear, beloved,
release for me.
Then turn, stand strong upon this Earth,
face the son, and travel your own journey.
